Frequently asked questions
A media engineering student who has been picking mushrooms in the forest since childhood. As part of a digital marketing study project, we have to create a fictional website about our passion. The aim is to apply the concepts learned in class to this website.
To get started, you only need to know a few species, generally 4 to 8 edible mushrooms that are easy to recognise.
Limiting yourself to a small number of well-identified species is the best way to pick mushrooms safely and without stress, especially with children. Once you have mastered the basics and gained confidence, it becomes easier to gradually expand your knowledge on subsequent outings.
The best season for mushroom picking is autumn, generally from September to November, when humidity and temperatures are ideal.
However, some species can also be found in spring or summer, depending on the weather and the region. For a first experience with children, autumn remains the easiest time:
mushrooms are more visible, more numerous, and picking is often more rewarding.
When in doubt, the rule is simple: do not touch, pick or consume.
If a mushroom cannot be identified with certainty, it is best to leave it where it is and continue your walk. At home, never mix a questionable mushroom with a safe harvest. If you have any questions, you can always ask a specialist (mycologist, mycology society) for advice.
With children, this is also an opportunity to teach them an essential rule: when in doubt, stop.
